Quick Facts:
- You DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT to travel to Puerto Rico as a US Citizen! Your driver’s license will get you in! Being in Puerto Rico is Like being in the USA 🇺🇸 but everything is in Spanish. FYI they are all also US Citizens (even though it feels like you’re in a tropical foreign destination / island)
- Language: Spanish and English are the official languages. Most locals speak English, especially in tourist areas. But, don’t be surprised if you end up at a resturnat with only a Spanish menu or coming across people who don’t know english at all! Brush up on your español before you go!
- Currency: The U.S. dollar is the official currency.
- What is the drinking age in Puerto Rico? The drinking age in Puerto Rico is 18, but to enter some bars and clubs you must be 21 or up.
- Cannabis: yes medically is legal, No recreationally (still illegal at this time)
- Phone, Internet & WiFi – No difference than back home on the mainland USA! I have cricket (part of AT&T) and it worked just like normal. We also had a T-Mobile phone with us and that carrier did well. No extra fees or charges. The hotel had WiFi so I used my nord VPN to stay protected while online (like how I’m writing this to you now!
Getting to & around Puerto Rico
- Flights: Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, making it easily accessible from major U.S. cities without the need for a passport. San Juan’s Luis Muñoz MarĂn International Airport (SJU) is the main gateway.
- Transportation: Renting a car is the best way to explore the island. Ride-share apps like Uber are available in San Juan and nearby areas.

The first time we went to Puerto Rico… our Transportation situation:
Flew there on Southwest but once we arrived, We rented a car from thrifty. They have Uber/Lyft taxis public transit, golf carts and other options to rent and ride around. Plus the ferry we were going to take to Flamenco Island until the hurricane rolled in! My boyfriend had chartered us a private catamaran tour of all the islands, snorkeling, food, for a day but it was canceled by the capital in charge because of the swells and storm! Depending on how long you’ll be there and where you’re trying to go I’d suggest renting a car! Also most insurance and even AAA seemed to work all the same in PR as the US
Where to Stay

- Vieques and Culebra: Ideal for those seeking secluded beaches and a slower pace.

Accommodation Where we stayed:
Courtyard by Marriott: This Hotel was on the more chill side of town in Carolina. The room was like an apartment without the oven and the views were breathtaking (327 & 827) from sunset to sunrise. We had a HUGE balcony with comfy chairs, plenty of FREE coffee and tea, plus the pool and beach chairs were all included too!
As far as the food as the hotel… Food NOT good all 5 restaurants inside comes from the same kitchen / chef / menu! The quality and pictures on Google from 3-5 years ago are VERY different than what you’ll receive. But I’m a huge foodie! The newest photos online are way more accurate. The presentation is okay but what’s worse is the taste. Everything taste fake. Ranch dressing definitely out of a bottle, Caesar wrap was good minus the fake flavor of the dressing but the other ingredients tasted fine lettuce chicken croutons tortillas… oh and the fries no flavor. tried to dip them in ranch but that didn’t go well. Juan was amazing at the main bar and made us some mocktails “spicy margaritas” very tasty — really just a spiked lemonade with jalapeño or whatever they have I saw him adding hot sauce!
